How to Add DHA to Your Child’s DietIf you want your child to become more intelligent, give him increased amounts of DHA, a nutrient that is an essential component of the brain. An omega-3 fatty acid, DHA is known to aid in brain development and help promote many health benefits for your child.

The simplest way to increase levels of DHA is to include it in your child’s diet. This nutrient is present in certain types of food and is also available in supplements.

Food Sources of DHA

Plants like freshly ground, organic flax seeds are a source of DHA. Fishes, particularly sardines, anchovies, salmon and mackerel, also contain DHA but nutrition expert Dr. Joseph Mercola warns that these may be contaminated with industrial pollutants and toxins – mercury, PCBs, radioactive poison, etc. It is therefore important to be extra cautious when choosing the fish you will include in your child’s meal.

DHA Supplements

Aside from food sources, DHA supplements can also enhance your child’s diet. Fish oil is the most commonly used supplement. It is a clean, natural, and safe alternative to fresh fish. Remember that not all brands of fish oils are the same so make sure you only get high-quality ones. Dr. Mercola notes that fish oil is very perishable – it can easily oxidize and produce pesky radicals inside your body when you don’t have sufficient antioxidants. Thus, it is a challenge to find a kind of DHA supplement with better and lasting results.

Another is Cod liver oil, which had long been known as a good kids’ supplement for its omega-3 fats and Vitamins A and D content. However, it is no longer recommended by Dr. Mercola as recent findings say that cod liver oil is not giving the appropriate balance of Vitamin A and D ratios that a person needs.

The third type of supplement is Krill oil. It is extracted from krill, a shrimp-like crustacean that serves as food for whales and is considered one of the most renewable resources available from the environment.  Krill oil is currently one of the most popular dietary supplements because it helps increase the intake of essential fatty acids and antioxidants.

But, like fish oil, not all krill oils are similar in quality. You have to choose the best krill oils for your child.  Dr. Mercola recommends his favorite product, Kids’ Krill Oil, which comes from pure krill oil that is found in a krill type, which thrives in the Antarctic waters. Krill oil has omega 3-fats called phospholipids, which protects and builds cell membranes. Kids’ Krill Oil is an excellent source of DHA that will boost your child’s brain development and total health.

Choose Your DHA Source

You can definitely help your kid improve his mental performance and learning skill by giving him a diet with a high level of DHA. All you have to do is choose which DHA source, food or supplement, is appropriate for your child’s health.

Just purchased Children’s DHA by Nordic Naturals. It is an omega-3 supplement with cod liver oil. Our goal is to help our 7 year old with attention deficit concerns. Is KRill oil better to use, and why?

    Thanks so much
