Concerned groups have sounded the alarm bells on how food and beverage companies spend two billion dollars a year on junk food marketing for kids, and how the fast food industry spends over five million dollars EVERY DAY marketing their unhealthy offerings for children. You can’t just shrug this off, because junk food and processed foods remain a significant contributor to skyrocketing rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, and strokes in adults and children alike.
Dr. Joseph Mercola reveals that a new campaign is underway to expose this deceptive marketing and to turn the spotlight on foods for genuine optimal health. “A new campaign, ‘We’re Not Buying It,’ will help expose deceptive marketing to children, debunk industry claims, and highlight the latest research, in the hopes of ending this assault on today’s youth.”
Your Kid’s Health Is In Jeopardy
The Interagency Working Group on Foods Marketed to Children (IWG) reports disturbing findings on the state of most children’s diets in the United States. (Link) According to the report:
- Nearly 40 percent of children’s diets come from added sugars and unhealthy fats.
- Only 21 percent of youth ages six to 19 eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
Combine that with the fact that kids watch an average of over 10 food-related ads every day (nearly 4,000 every year), and that 98 percent of food advertisements viewed by children are for products that are high in fat, sugar, or sodium.
Dr. Mercola calls this “a veritable recipe for disaster,” because illnesses that used to occur in middle age and beyond – like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure – are now affecting children.
“Make no mistake, the advertisers are doing all they can to lure your child in,” he says.
In 2010 alone, the food and beverage industry spent a staggering 40 billion dollars and more lobbying congress againstregulations that would decrease the marketing of unhealthy foods to children.
To illustrate the deception that has been happening, a 2011 study by the Prevention Institute found that 57 percent of “Better-for-You” children’s foods were high in sugar, 95 percent contained added sugar, and 21 percent contained artificial colors. (Link)
Act Fast! Protect Your Kid’s Health Today
Did you know that even those who are just 3 years old are able to recognize some soda, fast food, and junk food brands? Research shows that when parents fed their preschool-aged children junk foods high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, it had a lasting impact on their taste preferences.
For example, see if your child can recognize the “golden arches” of McDonald’s!
The repercussions can seriously affect your child’s overall health. One study from British researchers revealed that children who ate a predominantly processed food diet at age three had lower IQ scores at age 8 ½. For each measured increase in processed foods, participants had a 1.67-point decrease in IQ. (Link)
“The best time to shape your kids’ eating habits is while they’re still young. This means starting from birth with breast milk and then transitioning to solid foods that have valuable nutrients, like egg yolk, avocado, and sweet potatoes. You can easily cross any form of grain-based infant cereal off of this list,” advises Dr. Mercola.
The Prevention Institute has spearheaded the “We’re Not Buying It” campaign, petitioning President Barack Obama to put voluntary, science-based nutrition guidelines into place for companies that market foods to children. Sign this petition now and go a step further – stop supporting companies that produce nutritionally empty treats for your child!
Dr. Mercola also writes about how to wean yourself off processed foods in seven steps, a useful guide you can implement at home. Another step in the right direction is Dr. Mercola’s nutritional plan– spare your child from junk food and processed foods and feed him raw, organic foods.Get him on regular exercise, and supplement his diet with krill oil and other supplements to help jumpstart his mental development and learning.
