What You Should Know about ADHDIf your child keeps on fidgeting, squirming and blurting out words and gives you a lot of headache for not listening to your directions, then chances are he is suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the most commonly diagnosed disorder in children.

ADHD is a developmental disorder that affects an estimated three to five percent of the school-age population, based on an article by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. A person with ADHD has a slower development of certain abilities like impulse control and paying attention as compared to the majority of the population.

Symptoms of ADHD

Children with ADHD generally show the following symptoms:

  1. Impulsiveness – Often characterized by behaviors such as jumping from one activity to another, being disorganized and tending to interrupt others’ conversations.

  2. Inattention – Refers to showing inability to concentrate or to focus, having listening difficulty, exhibiting motor clumsiness and being in a state of daydream.

  3. Hyperactivity – Pertains to being in a constant state of restlessness, which can include fidgeting, climbing on things, restless sleeping, and lacking the ability to sit still for a period of time.

The Link between ADHD and DHAs

Although there’s no known specific cause of ADHD, factors like genetics, diet, and the environment may contribute to ADHD. In fact, when we talk about diet, scientific studies reveal that ADHD is linked to low levels of DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid known to support kids’ cognitive function and ability to concentrate and focus. DHA is also responsible for regulating muscle function and coordination, which enables a child to control his movement and make appropriate behavior.

Managing ADHD

Medications are frequently used to manage ADHD. However, they can cause potential side effects: insomnia, increased irritability, and decreased appetite and growth.

Dr. Joseph Mercola, a renowned nutrition expert, discourages the use of drugs.  He suggests that you give your children omega-3 oils like fish oil and krill oil.  Kids’ Krill Oil is one of Dr. Mercola’s recommended products.  It combines antioxidants and essential fatty acids like DHA in one powerful product that can help your kids’ optimal brain development.
